Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2003 HM, 2007 TV18, (304330) 2006 SX217, and 2014 GG49

Background


This is a planning page for Goldstone radar observations of up to FOUR near-Earth asteroids during
seven tracks on April 18/19 - 26.   We will try to detect all four asteroids during Apr 18/19, 19, and 20
and then concentrate on only one (2006 SX217) on the other dates.    Below is some background 
information on each object.


WE MAY DEVOTE SOME OR ALL OF THE DOY 108 (Apr 18) TRACK TO SWAPPING THE KLYSTRON.



(304330) 2006 SX217
2006 SX217 was discovered on Sep. 30, 2006 by Mt. Lemmon Survey.
Its absolute magnitude of 18.8 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of 0.55 km.
Otherwise its physical properties are unknown.  Due to its absolute magnitude, this is the largest
object of the four that we intend to observe in this suite of observations.

2006 SX217 will approach within 0.032 AU (~12.3 lunar distances) on April 23, 2014. The asteroid will be an excellent
target at both Goldstone and Arecibo and we have six tracks scheduled at Goldstone (Apr 19-26) and four at Arecibo (Apr 21-24).
We expect to obtain the images with resolution as fine as 7.5 m and possibly as fine as 3.75 m.


2003 HM
2003 HM was discovered on Apr. 23, 2003 by Lincoln Laboratory ETS in New Mexico.
This asteroid was observed at Arecibo shortly after its discovery.
Arecibo obtained 15 m delay-Doppler images, which revealed that the object is ~120-150 m in size.
The bandwidth of the primary suggests that it's a rapid rotator with a period of ~ 3 h or less. 

2003 HM will approach at 0.043 AU (~16.7 lunar distances) on April 20, 2014. The asteroid will be a weak 
target at Goldstone and moderately strong target at Arecibo. There are three tracks scheduled at Goldstone 
(Apr 18/19, 19, and 20) and two at Arecibo (Apr 24 and 25).

NOTE: optical astrometry is needed before the radar observations start as our pointing uncertainties are still large.
We'd like to thank Peter Birtwhistle (UK) for obtaining astrometry from 2003 HM.  It made a huge difference!


2007 TV18
2007 TV18 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on October 9, 2007, tracked for a few days, and then
not observed again until early April of 2014.  Little is known about its physical properties, but its
absolute magnitude of 23.4 suggests a diameter within a factor of two of about 70 meters.  It will
approach within 0.020 AU on April 18 when it should be detectable at Goldstone.

We plan to observe it during tracks on April 18/19, 19, and 20.

This object is on NASA's Near-Earth Objects Human Spaceflight Accessible Target Study (NHATS) list, so
improving its orbit and characterizing it are particularly important.


2014 GG49
2014 GG49 has an absolute magnitude of 25.7 that suggests a diameter within a factor of two
of about 23 meters.  This is the smallest of the four objects we will observe and it will also approach
most closely: only four lunar distances.  It may be strong enough for ranging but we do not expect
SNRs strong enough for imaging.  We plan to observe it only on April 19 and 20.



The Minor Planet Center has classified 2006 SX217 and 2003 HM as  "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids."
