2010 JL33 Goldstone Radar Observations Planning


Background


2010 JL33 was discovered on May 6, 2010 by the Mt. Lemmon Survey in Arizona. 
This object has an absolute magnitude of 17.6, and appears to have a very low albedo. 
The nominal size estimate is ~1.8 km.  2010 JL33 has highly eccentric (e = 0.7) 
orbit and a Tisserand parameter of 2.91, which hints that this object could have a cometary origin.

2010 JL33 will approach within 0.0427 AU (~16.6 lunar distances) on Dec. 9, 2010, when
it will be a very strong radar target. 

For optical observations, 2010 JL33 is too close to the Sun until Dec. 8, 
when it emerges as a 14.9 mag object.  It will quickly brighten to mag. 13.4 by Dec. 12, 
and than by the end of December it fades to about magnitude 16.3.

Goldstone radar observations are scheduled on Dec. 11 and 12.
Arecibo observations scheduled on Dec. 5 and 6 were cancelled due to transmitter problems.

GOLDSTONE OBSERVATIONS FOR DEC 11 ARE ON SCHEDULE. IT IS NOT CLEAR IF WE ARE STILL GOING
TO BE AFFECTED BY THE AZIMUTH BEARING PROBLEMS. TONIGHT'S TRACK WILL LIKELY DECIDE IF THERE WILL
BE A FOLLOWUP TRACK ON DEC 12.

2010 JL33 has been classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" by the 
Minor Planet Center.
